Movie Review: Real Genius

Genre:  Action/Comedy
With: Val Kilmer, (Mitch) Gabe Jarrett, (Chris) William Atherton, (Doctor Hathaway) and Patti  D’Arbanville (Jordan) and directed by: Martha Coolidge.
Some common characteristics of this action/comedy movie are: boy and girl relationships, good guys’ verses bad guys, insurmountable moral dilemmas solved and funny dorm room antics.
Real Genius is a movie about pride, power and concealed manipulation. The government (CIA and Military) is secretly working to develop a new state of the art laser weapons system.  They recruit the help of a prestigious college professor named Doctor Hathaway, who in turn uses several of his genius students (including Chris and Mitch) to assist with the project. The two have no idea of the CIA’s/ Military or of the professor’s pack.  But when they do find out they ultimately get their much deserved revenge.
The beginning of the movie is set in space. An advanced space ship is flying and deploying a new laser weapons system. The beam steams to earth and vaporizes it target, a man sitting drinking tea with his friend. But it’s just a created illusion, one that the government has generated with their concept design team.  The camera zooms away from the space ship shown on the wall, back into a room filled with government agents. They are all so excited about the concept they want the laser up and ready for action in months, of course for the good of the people.
Mitch is 15, and a genius. He’s so smart his mother and father enroll him in a prestigious college where he’s been recruited by Professor Hathaway. Professor tells him he’ll be working with other brilliant minds. But the professor has an undisclosed agenda. Professor Hathaway has been receiving grants from the federal government for research but they have vowed to stop all funding of projects if he doesn’t help them invent the new laser weapons system. Mitch has no idea but soon the evil plan will be discovered.
Chris is another genius Doc. Hathaway recruited and also working on the laser weapons system. Chris and Mitch become roommates and have a clash between their brilliant minds but when Mitch is ready to leave collage because he’s hazed, Chris defends him and they become loyal friends.
Mitch meets a girl named Jordan in the dorm and they hit it off. She’s a beauty and a brain but doesn’t flaunt it and Mitch likes this. It seems like they are always to busy to get together. Finally, Mitch realizes college has more meaning with Jordan by his side and involved in the plot until the end.
The dorm is full of brilliant minds and advanced technical concepts. New technology is the norm and students in laboratories and class rooms work diligently to create and explore new ideas. Groups and individuals are always involved in research. It’s why they chose this prestigious brainy university.
Once again, Doctor Hathaway is being threatened by the government to perform, and gives Chris an ultimatum, invent the laser or fail as a senior. Chris decides he can never complete the project but when Mitch finds out he encourages Chris to stick it out. Finally they complete the project together and by the way, it is a real (laser) blast.
Well, I can’t give the end of the story away, so you’ll just have to see the rest on your own. You may like the movie more than I did since I would only give it a 7 out of 10 overall.  With that said, I do feel like the director did a good job structuring cleverly devised action filled scenes to create an interesting  movie. In conclusion, as far as Action genre’s go, the movie Real Genius fits the bill but in my opinion still is not as good as Indiana Jones  or a movie like ‘Diamonds are Forever’ with James Bond. Also, the comedy is more childish and not as funny as Planes, Trains and Automobiles.

Hunter and Gatherer

I’m a Hunter and Gatherer
Have you ever know someone who has a deep respect for land and nature. A person who believes we
can see and even hear our creator throughout the earth and universe, someone who plants, hunts, and
gathers food and wood for his family, gratefully.
Early in the spring the driving rains fall, and you can smell the soil coming to life. Spring asparagus and
morels abound, provided you know where to look.  It’s during this time my wife Gayle begins to talk about
preparing our garden for planting, something we’ve done together for 30 years.
Once the soil is ready we plant a variety of vegetables for the coming seasons. The vegetables we
don’t eat during the summer get frozen or canned for the year. Some of the vegetables we grow are; green
beans, tomatoes, onions, beets and corn. The winter squash we grow are stored inside our barn under
straw to keep for the winter. There is nothing better than eating fresh vegetables right out of your own
garden, but some of the best treats (mulberries, raspberries and blackberries) are found out wandering
fields and forests.
Gayle and I like fishing for salmon in the fall. One of our favorite spots is in Ludington, at the state
campground. Fishing for salmon is exciting. During the fall-salmon-run you can catch 20-30 pounders
or at least have your line snapped several times from the shore. I like to filet the fish we catch
and freeze them for the winter.
October 1, is the start of deer season. I’ve hunted deer with bow and gun for 41 years. For me deer
hunting is not a sport. I don’t hunt for the kill or antlers. I hunt for food to feed my family
and feel blessed every time I harvest game.
Well, it’s time for winter now and I have to get busy cutting wood to warm our home.  The reasons I cut
wood are; to get outdoors, for the exercise and to save on my natural gas bill.
Nature has blessed my family with its bounty. Hopefully your experiences have been just as meaningful.

The Great Outdoors!

Recreating outdoors is my favorite pastime.  The outdoor activities I enjoy most are; exploring nature, hiking, biking, horseback riding, metal detecting, fishing, kayaking, sporting clay shooting, and hunting. Some would call me an outdoor recreational enthusiast.  It’s ok by me, because being outdoors has diverse benefits. More people should experience being outside and participating in different outdoor recreational sports.
Spending time outdoors has always been fun for me. This may sound crazy to you but before I was four years old I remember walking back deep into the woods with my little friends to catch tadpoles, frogs and critters. It was our daily pastime, and we couldn’t wait to fill our buckets. Once I remember catching a large milk snake early in the morning and carrying it into my mother who was still sleeping soundly in her bed. This was the first time I realized how terrified she was of snakes.
For my wife and I there is no better place to get the exercise we need to help us stay physically and mentally fit, than in the outdoors. We’ve been together now for 35 years and spent a lot of time outside recreating.
A great outdoor activity I would recommend trying is hiking.  If you’re just starting out, a 3-4 mile hike should take you less than an hour to complete. You can figure walking about one mile in 15-18 minutes. My wife and I like to hike through Michigan State and also National Parks. State and National Parks all have great maps available for you to locate the trail that suits your needs. For additional hiking options, click on this Pure Michigan link.  http://www.michigan.org/Things-to-Do/Outdoors/Hiking/Default.aspx
Kayaking is another great activity; everyone should try at least once.  Two weeks ago my wife and I went on a full moon paddle down the Shiawassee River in Linden with about 25 people.  The trip started in the evening and as the sun set behind us in the west a full moon rose in the east. It’s an awesome feeling to be enveloped in nature in a little kayak, calmly floating down a stream like a leaf.
Today, studies show people who play outside are healthier both mentally and physically. A quote from the National Park Service (2006) Committee on Health and Recreation states..“Increasingly, scientific evidence points to the fact that the American public needs to increase their level of physical activity to improve overall health and wellbeing. Recreational attributes inherent to National Parks play a vital role in what is now emerging as a powerful prescription for our nation's health: physically active outdoor recreation”.
Besides being very inexpensive, I know recreating in the outdoors has benefited my wife and I in at least two more ways over the years. It’s helped us to keep fit and relieved stress. If you’re not already getting  your fix outside please find a friend and get out, in our great outdoors!
